4,962,571 is the story of a boy suddenly captivated by the idea of counting to a very large number. He sets a goal for himself, and through self-discipline, creativity, insight, and hard work, he...well, you will have to see whether he reaches it or not.
When writing 4,962,571 I tried to deliberately avoid many of the conventions of children's books. I wanted to write a book that was as open-ended and as challenging and as wonderful as the world children really experience. The inspiration for the story came from the surprisingly difficult tasks that Montessori children set for themselves in their classrooms.
Montessori Madness!
A Parent to Parent Argument for Montessori Education

The best-selling book on Montessori education over the last three years, Montessori Madness! is widely used by schools, teacher training centers, and parents as an accessible introduction to Montessori. This book traces the journey of our family as we wrestle with questions of how best to educate our children. It explores why we eventually chose Montessori school and what we have since discovered.

that 17th hat

That 17th Hat is the story of a family on a spontaneous outing together. During this adventure at a hat store, the children get an intriguing taste of far off lands. The youngest learns from the oldest, and the oldest…well, you will have to see whether the oldest learns anything from the youngest.
Children are verbal adventurers! I wrote That 17th Hat to honor this daring spirit. Children love to hear words and to manipulate language. This book combines the joy of new words with the affinity many children have for hats and other clothing. I wanted to tell a fun and touching story that brought together language exploration, clothing, and how these two relate to real-world adult careers, cultures, and geographical locations. That 17th Hat brings children into ‘contact’ with interesting lands and activities by offering a glimpse of the wonderful places where various hats are worn.

N is for NORTH KOREA

Sold Out

N is for North Korea is the story of a young girl in North Korea who tries to contact her cousin in South Korea via a children’s balloon. Through the course of this daring adventure, she explores the world around her. N is for North Korea introduces readers to what that world is like for this girl.
Inspired by the emphasis in Montessori education on real-world learning through hands-on materials, engagement with the outside community, and allowing students to deeply explore their own interests, I wrote N is for North Korea to highlight these principles. I also wanted to write a story that honored a child's intelligence and that could appeal to children at a variety of ages and developmental levels. N is for North Korea can be read on multiple levels: a story of a young girl and her family and pets, a grand adventure with trial and error, a geography and cultural exploration, and a political commentary.
